Happy 50th anniversary Fleet Science Center!

The Fleet Science Center is celebrating 50 years with a blast!  They’ve been celebrating science since the museum opened in 1973 in Balboa Park. Since then, 26 million people have visited the Fleet, which has interactive exhibits and an IMAX theatre. Their mission is, “to realize a San Diego where everyone is connected to the power of science.”

Today they kicked off the anniversary with a science experiment featuring liquid nitrogen (at -321 degrees F) and warm water topped with colorful playground balls. They put the liquid nitrogen in a 2-liter bottle and sealed it tightly. The pressure built and boom!

As part of the celebration, the museum is offering special pricing and events throughout the year. Here are some photos of the museum over the years.

Circus + Science = FUN!

Last night my kids and I attended the sneak peek of the new Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s “Circus: Science Under the Big Top,” which opens today and runs through September 7.

We learned some cool behind-the-scenes info about how the circus works plus we enjoyed circus performances from The Fern Street Circus, including this impressive juggling act and this act: spinning a ball while doing somersaults.

The kids loved all the circus extras too, like face painting, carnival food (cotton candy, popcorn and hot dogs) as well as circus fun mirrors and carnival games.

The best part? They were learning about science and having fun at the same time!

“Don’t Try This At Home” Show = Science Made Fun!

Science is always interesting but it’s really cool, (especially for kids), when it’s fun!

That’s why we loved the preview of the “Don’t Try This At Home” science show at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

Dry Ice
Dry ice is always a hit!

There was a lot of quiet anticipation, followed by gasps and giggles and silliness, as well as questions like, “How’d they do that?”

The 20-minute shows run throughout the day at 15 minutes past the hour.

I’ve watched this hair dryer + toilet paper on a paint roller video a lot and it doesn’t get old!
